On my birthday: Advice to my younger self

Conscious Living,

I LOOOVVEE birthdays and I’m celebrating “being me”!

Someone asked me a while ago what advice I would give to my younger self? This a tough one, mainly because there are so many… these make the top 5.

  1. Be my own biggest cheerleader. I realized that I don’t need other people’s input or feedback for validation, their opinions should not impact my sense of self-worth. We are all unique. I started celebrating “being me” more often. This doesn’t need to be big. It is often the small, seemingly simple things in life that need to be celebrated.
  2. Life is a journey. Life is like a heartbeat, with ups and downs. It is not only good or only bad. The quality of my thinking =  the quality of my life. A big lesson was to appreciate that I’m responsible for bouncing back from a ‘not so nice place’. As jealousy, anger and fear is a choice; so is joy. I believe that a joyful spirit is evidence of a grateful heart.
  3. Busyness is not a badge. I often had to ask myself if my mind is full or if I’m mindful in the moment? Trying to multitask and getting more things done is slowing me down. A big lesson was that “busyness” is not a badge to be proud of. I’m now intentional about making time for things that makes my heart smile. I have experienced that having a morning routine really set me up for a successful day… this is building a routine to improve my mindset, expand my heart, align my soul and boost my health.
  4. My “bloopers” doesn’t define me. I have made some choices, that in hindsight, I regret. If, I’m honest, calling a spade a spade, the impact of those choices significantly affected my confidence levels. I had to remind myself that I’m human. And humans make judgment errors and bad choices. What a relief to recognize that my past and my bloopers are not defining me. In fact, it gave me many stories and life lessons to share.
  5. Humility touch hearts. Being humble and kind is a superpower. One of my heroes is Nelson Mandela. I’m amazed at his ability to forgive, to put the past behind him, to collaborate with the “enemy” and to be compassionate in dealing with all people. I didn’t have the privilege to meet him in person. People said his presence made a big impact on their lives.

So, I have learned to be intentional about the footprint I leave in this journey called life. When I look back, I want to be able to say I made a meaningful mark.

Thank you for every birthday message and call. You made me feel loved.
